WHY KNOWING ISN'T ENOUGH

As humans, we often know exactly what we should be doing to improve our health. We read book after book, watch videos, listen to podcasts, and consult doctors and personal trainers. We understand the basics of healthy eating, exercise, stress management — even what to do when faced with specific diagnoses like diabetes or high blood pressure.
But despite this knowledge, many of us still struggle to make lasting changes.

Why Do We Know What to Do but Don’t Do It?
Training as a health coach has deepened my understanding of why this happens. It’s not that we lack awareness or information. Often, the missing piece is behaviour change—knowing how to get from where we are now to where we want to be.
Think of it this way: knowing the destination (better health) is vital, but knowing how to travel the journey is even more crucial. Without a clear path, motivation, and practical tools, even the best intentions can falter.
The Science of Behavior Change: Small Steps and Tiny Habits
Experts like BJ Fogg and James Clear have shown us that sustainable change happens through small, manageable steps—tiny habits that build momentum and become part of our lifestyle. It’s not about massive overnight transformations but consistent, incremental progress.
For example, instead of trying to overhaul your entire diet at once, a small habit could be adding one extra serving of vegetables each day. Over time, these tiny changes compound, making healthy living feel natural rather than overwhelming.
How a Health Coach Can Help
This is where a health coach plays a vital role. Unlike doctors, who are essential for diagnosing and treating health conditions, health coaches focus on supporting behaviour change through practical strategies and mindset work.
Imagine someone diagnosed with diabetes. Their doctor recommends a specific diet and regular exercise, but without guidance, they might feel overwhelmed or struggle to maintain these changes long-term. A health coach helps break these goals down into achievable steps, tailor-made for the individual’s lifestyle and preferences.
We work together to:
* Develop realistic action plans that fit your life
* Build habits gradually, avoiding burnout or frustration
* Identify and overcome mental blocks or emotional barriers
* Foster motivation that comes from within, rather than relying on external pressure
* Provide accountability, encouragement, and ongoing support
A Functional Approach for Lasting Results
Behavior change is a cornerstone of a functional health approach—one that treats the whole person, not just symptoms. This approach helps create sustainable lifestyle changes that improve overall well-being and reduce reliance on quick fixes.
When we understand the science behind habits and change, and have someone walking alongside us, the journey becomes manageable, empowering, and even enjoyable.
