An unexpected cancer diagnosis showed me the toxic burden I was placing on my body and our home - our cookware, the cleaning cupboard, the perfume on my nightstand.

I'm a busy homeschool mom of three. I didn't have the time to research and overhaul it all in a weekend.

So I learnt slowly, and made one small, intentional swap at a time, all between lessons, and life which just carried on around me.

Low-tox living has to fit inside the day you already live, not become one more thing to add to your already full plate.

Stewarding your health is part of stewarding the calling you've already said yes to.

Start with one thing. That's enough.

We found Charlotte Mason's grave in a quiet churchyard. Visited the Armitt Museum and got to see lots of cool things.

Miss Mason is often put on a pedestal in homeschool circles. But looking over her actual handwriting, her books and other things, I realised how ordinary and how special she was, both at once.

Her ideas haven't changed. Principles rooted in Biblical truth don't go stale, even a century later.

The Lake District has inspired so many - Wordsworth's poems, Beatrix Potter's stories and paintings, the adventures in Swallows and Amazons. Standing in that beautiful landscape, you can understand why.

And so we keep going - same principles, different landscape, and a living education fit for our family and place.

Last week Friday was World Environment Day. At our co-op, the kids and I chatted about how we focus a lot on recycle and reuse — but rarely on the first, word: reduce, especially when it comes to plastic.

Then we read Galimoto — the beautiful story of Kondi, a little boy who gathers scraps of wire to build a wire toy car (a galimoto). Inspired by him, we twisted scraps of copper cable into bookmarks, each one creating their own different design.

What began at co-op is still unfolding in our house days later.

A simple handicraft with a meaningful story can be all that's needed to remind us to care.

Lauren's Homemade Granola

INGREDIENTS

• 3 cups gluten-free organic rolled oats

• 1 cup pecans, roughly chopped

• 1/2 cup sunflower seeds

• 1 cup coconut flakes

• 3 tablespoons flax seeds

• a pinch of himalayan salt

• 1/3 cup organic coconut oil (or butter)

• 1/3 cup raw honey

• 1/3 cup dried cranberries

• a generous dash of cinnamon

METHOD

1. Heat oven to 150°C (300°F). Line a tray with unbleached baking paper.

2. Mix together the oats, pecans, sunflower seeds, coconut flakes, flax seeds, salt & cinnamon in a bowl.

3. Melt the coconut oil or butter with the raw honey, & pour over the dry mix. 4. Stir to coat evenly. Spread on the tray.

5. Bake in the oven for 25–30 min, stirring every 8–10 min, watching closely all the time. Cool fully.

6. Stir through the dried cranberries and store in a glass jar.

Serve with Greek yogurt or milk.

Yesterday we gathered online to share & celebrate this book! It was so lovely and encouraging to hear from contributors all over the world. 🌍

It's been a privilege to have contributed a chapter to Awakening the Whole Child: A Charlotte Mason Philosophy of Education for the 21st Century.

My hope is that it helps families and educators around the world see education not as academic achievement alone, but as the nurturing of the whole child — mind, body, heart, and spirit.

I wrote a case study about the joys and the challenges of living out a Charlotte Mason education here in Southern Africa, because ours is a perspective so often missing from the global conversation.

Despite limited resources and unique challenges, we've found that a rich, meaningful education can still flourish — through creativity, community, and a deep respect for children as persons.

My hope is that it encourages others to pursue an education full of curiosity, resilience, wonder, and a lifelong love of learning, wherever in the world they are.

Writing it has also stirred something I can't ignore: the conviction to keep writing my own children's stories, set in the Africa I grew up in. There's a real gap in living books for our part of the world — and so many of our children, scattered across the globe, may never know the baobabs, the bushveld, and the land that shaped me. I want to write those stories down before they slip away and I hope to encourage others to do the same.

With Joburg winters being so dry and the air so polluted, filling your space with plants (Peace Lilies are a favourite around here), genuinely improves indoor air quality.

How many hats is too many? 🎩

This reel was inspired by Caps for Sale — a familiar picture book my kids have loved.

Sometimes I feel like the peddlar, balancing a huge pile of hats on my head!

Work hat.
Mum hat.
Organiser hat.
Carer hat.
Cook hat.
The “hold-it-all-together” hat.

No wonder so many women feel worn thin.

Most of the women I work with aren’t doing anything wrong.
They’re just wearing a lot of hats — often all at once — in lives where the roles don’t easily reduce.

The problem isn’t effort.
It’s capacity.

And the solution usually isn’t doing more — it’s finding steadier ways to support energy, calm, and recovery inside real life.

Two years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer.

That woman feels a long way from who I am now — and whom I am still becoming.

Not because everything is “better” (I'm in remission now).
But because illness has a way of stripping life back to what actually matters.

What I learned most deeply is this:
Women don’t need fixing.
They need support that honours where they are.

I started this work because I want women to:
• feel less alone in seasons that feel heavy
• feel more grounded inside bodies that carry a lot
• release shame for not coping “better”
• feel capable again — without pressure or perfection
• feel confidently hopeful, even when life is still full

I know what it’s like to move through fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty while still showing up for others.
And I know how powerful it is when someone meets you without judgement — and still believes you can move forward.

My work is about creating space where women feel seen, heard, and valued — and gently supported to regain clarity, calm, and direction.
Not by becoming someone else.
But by learning how to thrive within the life they already have.

This is an ongoing journey — for me, and for the women I walk alongside.
And I believe steadiness, not striving, is what changes lives.
